SCENE XX III (MCS INTERROGATION)
(Jason and his attorney sit across from Alex and Bobby.)
Attorney, "Anything that was said was clearly under duress, intoxication, not the actual beliefs of my client."
Alex, "In vino veritas"
Bobby, "There's another phrase in Italian, "Mi e' sgusciato" means 'it slipped."
Attorney, "Either way it was done under the influence of alcohol. After Water Haven Police threatened my client at gun point."
Attorney, "Officer Wizensky's the one who should be in jail."
Alex, "Water Haven Police Department has taken away Officer Wizensky's gun and put him on restrictive duty. Now can we get back to your client's relationship with Ashley Gardella."
"This time the truth...hmm."
Raines looks at his attorney, "Ashley seduced me."
"You gotta be kiddin'."
Raines, "This is the first time I've ever done anything like this. It was a terrible mistake."
"Uh...What happened that night?"
Raines, "Ashley was suppose to meet me, she never showed."
"So she stood you up."
"That's why you called her cell phone."
Raines, "I was looking for her. Last calls went to voice mail. I..I waited for her all night, for her at the Four Seasons."
Attorney, "He was in his room from eleven to six a.m. You can verify that with the hotel."
Alex, "Oh we will."

SCENE XX IV (MCS ROSS' OFFICE)
"This time he didn't lie. The electronic key registered he entered his room at the Four Seasons at eleven eighteen. He made several fruitless calls to Ashley on his cell".
"He stopped dialing pain and began dialing pleasure. He accessed the in room adult entertainment at eleven fifty-eight.
"He ordered Barely Legal Co-eds Part II."
"And then he hit the mini bar...hard."
"He ordered a bacon cheeseburger from in-room dining at four a.m. Checked out at six."
"He left himself a humiliating electronic trail, but it alibis him."
PHONE RINGS: "Ross." (He listens.)
(Alex and Bobby wait.)
"Raines claims this is the first time he strayed. He is officially having a bad week."

(Nicole being interviewed on television.)
(Ross, Alex, and Bobby watch.)
"She's right, Raines isn't a killer,"
"...but the real killer deleted Raines' calls from Ashley's phone."
"He deliberately pointed us in that direction."
(Bobby takes the remote from Ross,
runs the video back and freezes it.)
"It's someone with a lot of anger towards Ashley and Raines,"
"...Brian Murphy, he dated Ashley."
"
"He blames Raines for their breakup."
"He seems to have gotten over Ashley's death awfully soon."
(Bobby and Alex exchange looks.)
(Bobby nods.)

SCENE XX VI (MARINA)
(Brian a boat, Bobby and Alex walk down the dock to him.)
Alex, "Going somewhere, Brian?"
Brian, "Uh..yeah, fishing."
(Alex motions for his bag in the boat.)
(When Bobby reaches for it.)
(Brian grabs and hands it to Alex who drops it on the dock and begins to go through it.)
"Well, underwear, socks," (she stands and points into the boat),
"beer, no bait, no fishing poles."
Brian, "I'm visiting my cousin in Bellport, okay. Cops told me to go, So I...."
"Water Haven Police told you to run?"
Brian, "Officer Sajak, Ashley dad's partner." (Alex looks up at Bobby.)
"So why did Sajak ask you to leave town?"
Brian, "He said Jason pulled some strings, got off and I was next on your list."
"He tell you why your next on our list?"
(Brian shakes his head no.)
"So you were at the party with Ashley that night."
"Well, maybe you saw her leave to meet Raines,"
"...and you decided to follow."
Brian, "It's not what happened."
"Where'd you go after the party, Brian?"
Brian, "Nowhere. Look, you talk to Ashley's step dad if you don't believe me. He and Sajak busted up the party after like midnight."
(Alex and Bobby listen to him.)
"They knocked me around."
"Why would they do that?"
Brian, "Wiznesky was pissed. Picked up Emily wandering the street."
"Emily,"
"...Ashley's little sister?"
Brian, "Half sister."
(Bobby looks down at him.)

SCENE XX VII (BOARDWALK)
(Bobby and Alex walking.)
"Wiznesky didn't tell us about the party."
"No. He also didn't mention he found out Ashley left his thirteen year old daughter with a drunk teen-aged boy."
(Bobby pauses at the gate.)
"I wonder if he told his wife?"
(Alex opens the door to the SUV, Bobby moves around the back.)

SCENE XX VIII (WIZNESKY'S HOME)
(Bobby and Alex sit across from Mrs. Wiznesky.)
Joyce, "Ashely told me she was taking Emily to the movies. I wasn't feeling well that day."
"But you knew they went to a party?"
Joyce"Of course, Emily always tells me the truth. She said the beer tasted like soap."
"Your husband must've been unhappy."
Joyce, "If Ray was upset he didn't let on. Course he never lets on these days, so."
"The tea that you're drinking that...its herbal tea."
Joyce, "Um hm."
"And that's a stent, isn't it... for chemo?"
Joyce, "Breast Cancer, metastasized to the liver."
(A Bobby moment with eyelashes,curls and sweet lips.)
"Must be difficult for you now that Ashley's gone."
Joyce, "I lost Ashley a long time ago."
"Your husband and Ashley, how'd they get along?"
Joyce, "He tried...you know, she wouldn't let Ray in and she was six years old, very attached to her own father even though he ignored her completely."
"Searching for a father in Jason Raines?"
Joyce, "Ray can't stand those people. Citidiots, he'd call them. Idiots from the city. After she started seeing Raines, things just got worse between them."
Emily enters and comes up behind her mother and protectively puts her hands on her shoulders.
Emily, "What's going on, Mama?"
Joyce, "Nothing, sweetheart, every thing's fine."
"You must be Emily, I'm Detective Goren,
"...and this is Detective Eames."
Alex waves.
Emily, "My mother can't talk to you,"
"...my dad wouldn't like it."
(Bobby looks at Alex.)
Emily, "He doesn't want her upset."
(Bobby looks up at her.)
Emily, "You have to go."

"Security tape from the bar. We were hoping that you might recognize a face,"
"...you know help us put things together."
Sajak, "This Raines guy, whose strings did he pull to get off?"
"He had an alibi."
(Bobby glances over at Alex.)
(Unfolds the paper,
And puts it in front of Sajak)
"I guess he deserves it, right?"
"His marriage imploding on the cover of the Ledger this morning."
"Those kids, so there's nobody that you see that might a been at that party you busted up?"
Sajak, "No one's jumpin' out."
"Wiznesky he must've been out of his mind,"
"...when he saw Emily with that beer."
Officer, "Ashley was always wild."
"He must've had his hands full."
"She didn't listen to anybody. She didn't listen to him."
"Now she's dead,"
"...and she has a grieving mother,"
"...and your partner's coolin' his heels on light duty,
"..after everything he went through with Joyce."
Sajak, "Yeah, and they take away his gun again because of that little tramp."
"Again? This isn't the first time your partner's been on restrictive duty?"
"You can't blame him for goin' after Raines, I mean if I had a daughter...(Shakes his head.)
Sajak, "If I didn't need my pension he'd have a bullet in his head."
Bobby nods.
"Wiznesky knew that Ashley was meeting Raines?"
"He might of drove into the city,"
"To confront him maybe?"
"Asked you...to cover up for him?"
"You know you're a father, you would understand."
Sajak, "Wiznesky didn't drive into the city, not until he got the call from homicide at five fifteen. I'm sorry" (Gets up and walks to door)
"I can't help you." (Leaves the room.)
(Bobby looks up in frustration,
then at Alex.)

SCENE XX X (OUTSIDE WATER HAVEN POLICE DEPT.)
(Ross shaking hands with Water Haven Police chief.)
"Nice talkin' to you, too."
(Walks across the street,
...where Goren an Eames wait.)
"The esteemed Captain of Water Haven P.D. assures me that"
"...Sajak and Wiznesky have been on the force eighteen years,"
"...and they were both on duty together all night the night of the murder."
"Subtext, the whole department will alibi him if we go to a Grand Jury."
"Did his Captain tell you he had to take a six month psych medical thirteen years ago?"
"Oddly enough he neglected to mention that."
"Hmm, Wiznesky was testifying in a domestic violence case the defendant grabbed his piece, shot a court stenographer in the head."
"She died instantly."
"So he's got an alibi now you're giving him a post traumatic stress defense."
"His wife had cancer,"
"...that's another stressor."
"Ashley acting out,"
"...leaving his daughter vulnerable at that wild party."
"How old is this daughter?"
"Thirteen...barely."
Okay, I'll drive back get the D.A. to subpoena Sajak and Swizensky's patrol records. He's under a lot of stress,"
"...when you take a run at this Wiznesky. Hit him hard."
(A local patrol car slowly rolls by them, giving them a hard look.
Bobby looks amused, Alex stunned and Ross concerned.)
"You two, watch your backs out here."
(They nod looking at each other.)

SCENE XX X (GUARD STATION)
"We know Ashley left Emily at a party that night, a party you and your partner shut down. We figured you neglected to tell us for a reason."
Ray, "It wasn't relevant."
"It wasn't relevant that your step-daughter,"
"...left your little girl with a bunch of drunken eighteen year olds?"
Ray, "Emily's a good kid. Raised right. I wasn't worried. I picked her up, dropped her off, went right back to the job."
Alex, "Okay, you could handle it."
"But Emily must've been scared?"
"Your wife was home alone. Worrying."
Ray, "Leave my wife out of this."
"Your wife...being sick."
"...I mean you can almost feel that, can't you. I mean physically the pain and the nausea."
Ray, "You don't know what I'm feeling."
"Rage...helplessness,"
"...I mean I do know because my mother she has lymphoma."
Alex looks at him in surprise.
"The doctors they talk about her life in months,"
"......and I think, you know, I'm smart, I'm resourceful..but that,"
"...its a lot."
Ray, "Joyce is going to make it. She's strong...and now she's gonna be fine......I got nothing more to say."
(He turns and walks away.)
(Bobby and Alex turn away Bobby looking down at his partner.)
"He's never gonna tell us what happened that night."
"But Emily, the good girl, the girl he raised not to lie."
"You mom, that was true, wasn't it?"
(He nods.)
"She's a fighter."
(He turns quickly to look down into her face.)
(He turns away and you see the pain on Alex's face.)

(Ray takes a gun from Sajak's desk.)

SCENE XX XI (ON THE BEACH)
(He glances over at her and back to the road, but says nothing.)
(Emily is walking her dog with Bobby and Alex trailing her.)
Emily, "Yeah my Dad was mad. I could tell."
Bobby, "So, that night,"
(He looks back at Alex.)
"...your father got angry...did he...did he ask where...where Ashley was going?"
Emily, "I told him. Ashley said she was going to a bar on a pier in the city. I know she was going to meet Jason Raines."
"I ask my Dad to go get her, but he couldn't."
"Since he was on duty?"
"You're gonna put Mr Raines in jail, aren't you? He killed my sister."
(Bobby looks up at Alex and they exchange a long look.)
Emily, "If my dad didn't have to work that night, Ashley would still be alive."
(Bobby stands.)

SCENE XX XI (MCS CONFERENCE ROOM)
Ross, "So the thirteen year old inadvertently tipped her father off about Ashley's trip to the city."
Alex, "Wiznesky goes after her, confronts her, things get out out hand..."
"Ashley ends up dead. Wiznesky dumps Raines cell phone calls, stages the robbery, drives back to Water Haven. Good theory, hard to prove."
"His partner had his back."
"Wiznesky,"
"...copied his partner's patrol log,"
"...with just enough variations to ring true."
"And he's got his whole department alibiing him...small town police force protecting one of their own. One of my worst nightmares."
(Bobby looks up at him,
...then down thinking.)
"We've got no influence, no leverage...they run their own game..."
"Well,"
"...maybe they think that we,"
"...run ours."
"Why don't I call their captain and give him a heads up about the indictment."
"Indictment, we're not even close."
"I'll let him think their thin blue line has a crack in it. That'll shake things up."
(Ross purposefully looks down at Bobby.)
(Bobby looks up then down thinking, then back up at him.)
